At the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show later this month, Nissan will show its new Nissan Leaf electric-car slated for global launch in 2010. Standing next to the Nissan Leaf will be the Land Glider EV concept.

Nissan says that the Land Glider concept is a “new proposal for urban mobility that can be enabled by zero-emission car.”

The Japanese automaker says that its narrow, ultra-compact body can help reduce traffic congestion and promote effective use of parking space. The Land Glider shifts the center of gravity by leaning on turns providing a sense of driving and a powerful ride.

2010 Nissan Versa Hatchback is a deceptive little vehicle

The 2010 Nissan Versa Hatchback is a deceptive little vehicle. Deceptive because it’s not that little! From the outside, it appears to be quite compact, but from the inside it’s a whole new ball game. With enough head and legroom to seat five adults comfortably, best in-class horsepower and torque, and 504L (17.8 cu ft) of luggage space it’s no wonder these hatchbacks can be seen zipping all around town.

Introduced to North America in 2006 as a 2007 model, the Versa comes in both sedan and hatchback configurations. The Versa sedan features a 1.6L 4-cylinder engine that produces 107 horsepower and 111 lb-ft of torque, whereas the hatchback gets a larger 1.8L 4-cylinder, 16-valve, DOHC enhanced engine that produces 122 horsepower and 127 lb-ft of torque. It’s interesting to note that the hatchback comes with the higher output of the two and the highest in its class, which sets it apart from its competition like the Honda Fit, the Toyota Yaris and Chevrolet Aveo.

Going back to the outside, the Versa is quite pleasing to look at. And with an exterior colour like Matador Red, it’s hard not to notice it. Its front and rear fascia differ from its sedan sibling due to the addition of the Sport Package ($1,900) in SL trim; making it noticeably sportier looking. From the rear end, the “SL” badge indicates that the Versa comes well equipped with such features as cruise control, 4-wheel ABS-enhanced disc brakes, traction control, and P185/65R15 all-season tires on 15” aluminum-alloy wheels.

Under the “SL” badge is another colourful emblem that says XTRONIC CVT, which signifies that this particular Versa comes with the optional automatic Continuously Variable Transmission ($1,300), Nissan’s CVT that allows the car to be driven at optimal torque ranges for responsive acceleration and ideal fuel efficiency. Now, if you prefer manually shifting the gears, the Versa hatchback comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission. No, it’s not a typo. It’s a 6-speed manual, another defining feature of the Versa.

Where the Versa also shines is with its drivability. It is very versatile, pardon the pun, and makes for a comfortable ride thanks to its front independent and rear torsion bar suspension. Parallel parking is also a breeze largely due to its large windows and the speed-sensing electric power steering. The Versa remains very stable at highway speeds too, and doesn’t feel like it’s going to blow over if there’s a little bit of wind.

Where I found the Versa needed a little bit of sprucing up is inside. I found the sea of black plastics on the dash was a little drab and uneventful. In comparison to the Honda Fit’s interior, the Versa has a way to go. On the other hand, the sea of black plastic includes much of the soft-touch variety, so it doesn’t feel cheap. Furthermore, because this Versa was outfitted with the Sport Package it had sport cloth seat trim giving it a little touch of flare. Not to mention the seats were pretty cozy to sit in whether up front or in the rear.

Nissan Silvia S15 built by Kazama Auto. S15 has SR20DET engine and HKS GT-series 3037S turbo. With Blitz intercooler, 740cc HKS injectors and custom Kazama exhaust system this Slivia S15 produces arround 500 horsepower.

Nissan Navara prices are both RM104,800.00

The Nissan Navara was launched today and is now available for sale at all Nissan dealers. The Navara does not replace the Frontier but is positioned as a new offering above the Frontier, priced at RM103,721.90 for the sole 2.5 liter automatic model in Peninsular Malaysia. Sabah and Sarawak prices are both RM104,800.00. Nissan has been offering both models in alot of countries now, with the old Frontier renamed as the D22 or the NP300 but sold in limited quantities.

It’s just as well that Nissan positioned the Navara one class above the Frontier because even in terms of size, the Navara is one size larger than the other pickup trucks in the country which are classified as compact pick-ups.

The Navara has is a full 100mm longer than the longest compact pick-up truck which is the Toyota Hilux, and its wheelbase of 3200mm is also a full 115mm longer than the longest wheelbase which is also the Hilux. If you think that the current pickup offerings are rather large and hard to park, this will be even harder!

The Navara is also the most powerful, with its 2.5 liter Nissan engine producing 174 PS at 4,000rpm and 403Nm of torque at 2,000rpm. It is mated to a 5-speed transmission with a single overdrive and an LSD. 4 non-overdrive gears means closer ratios compared to a 4-speed auto with 3 non-overdrive gears, this can keep the Navara in its powerband more often which should result in some very decent progress.

403Nm is alot of torque, about the same as the BMW 335i and the new M3, so expect lots of fun with the strong shove that kicks in at a peak of 2,000rpm. The turbo promises to be lag-less thanks to a VGT turbocharger which can vary its vane angles to have the turbine geometry always at its optimum (read this for a full explanation of what VGT is).

The truck uses a body on frame chassis, a rack and pinion steering wheel and a double wishbone suspension at the front and a solid axle with leaf springs at the rear. The interior is done in dark beige for the dash and light beige for the seats and looks like the one in the Latio. There are two cupholders at the front (positioned between the front seats) and two more for the rear that come out of the center armbox on the floor.

Other niceties include a leather interior, low range gearbox electronic switch which can switch from 2H to 4H and 4L electronically, an in-dash 6-CD player, Xenon headlamps for the front which Nissan says is JPJ approved so their officers won’t be able to give you a hard time, and an electro-chromatic rear view mirror on the interior with a built-in compass, similiar to the one in the BMW X3. This auto-dims whenever it detects a glaring light, and also displays a compass in the form of a small LED display in the top right of the mirror. The Xenon headlamps have their tilt adjustable from within the cabin in 4 steps.

Safety features include dual SRS airbags and ABS brakes. Some may be concerned by reports of the Navara failing an Euro NCAP crash test with horrible results (one strikethrough star) earlier this year, but Nissan has quickly fixed that with an update to the airbag software. Nissan says that the issue only affects a batch of Navaras that were produced between May 07 and December 07. There is no issue with Navaras produced before that since the 2005 launch, and after the fix.

The affected vehicles were also recalled for the fix. After being retested with the new airbag control unit software, the Navara now scores 3 stars for adult occupant protection and 4 stars for child occupant protection.

The Navara comes with a 3 year or 100,000km warranty in Malaysia.
